sacred art
Unlike other Portuguese collectors, mainly because of his deep republican and so-cialist convictions, Dr. Cândido Ferreira never showed interested in sacred art. How-ever, his craving for collecting from all sectors and artistic fields eventually led him to acquire some pieces of liturgical nature (intended for worship), and of Christian reli-gious content.
In a room with a beautiful skylight (which belonged to the original building), these objects were brought together in an attempt to evoke their function in the original religious spaces. The room highlights include an altar, paintings, wood carved sculptures and a “relief” from the 17th and 18th centuries, ex-votos from the 19th and 20th centuries, a crucified Christ by the contemporary sculptor José Rodrigues (1936-2016) and various liturgical implements in a display case, including a silver cross, which was given to the church of Febres, Dr. Cândido Ferreira’s home parish.
